URLS in tweet and character limits

The Twitter API will automatically convert URLs to t.co so according to the post below I should at the very least allow 20 characters for URLs even if the URL text is shorter.

I have been using the Twitterizer library for .NET to automate posting tweets. This has been working fine for some time. Recently, I started getting "The text of your tweet is too long" errors. Looking into this, I see my tweets are no longer than 140 characters. Why am I getting this error? The only related info I could find online was related to changes in the length of the tweet due to converting URLs to t.co URLs. No you can not turn off t.co URL shortening.
