I have recently developed an application that crawled twitter for text data to use for my academic research. I received the necessary permissions through the application procedure, and the data has been collected and used. My research is going as planned, but a company I work with has now expressed their interest in taking over the application as well as the data set I collected with it, once I am done with the research. Of course, if they use it, it is no longer purely academic work and will have a commercial context, so the pretences under which I acquired permission before would no longer apply. My question is whether you would allow this company to use the application and/or the data? Would you want them to gain the necessary permissions again? Would a new application procedure be necessary, and if so, do you think the odds of getting said permission would be different in this context?
