Unable to limit results of search or filter API

I am using the search (non-streaming) and filter (streaming) APIs for a side project and can’t seem to only get 5 or 10 tweets. The call to either keeps getting Tweets forever… the Twitter docs also don’t suggest a way to limit the # of search results. Is there something I can do with a param to limit search results or do I have to do something hacky like search for 5 seconds and then break/return out?

I’m using the Ruby Twitter gem:

The streaming API is intended for persistent connections that are active for long periods of time.

The Twitter::REST::Search API is what you want if you only want to get a couple of tweets at once. It supports a count parameter that requests that number of tweets be returned.

You would want to use the count parameter to limit the number of Tweets.

I do recommend that you look into our premium search offerings, as they are newer and more reliable. There is a free sandbox tier and several paid tiers if you are interested:

You do have to apply for a developer account if you’d like to use the premium tools.

Thanks for the responses.

I had already tried the count parameter but it doesn’t limit the # of Tweets overall. It limits the number of Tweets per page. I’m still getting unlimited number of pages… this doesn’t resolve my question. When I do a single call to the search API, I’m getting a ridiculous number of Tweets. How can I just get 5 or 10 Tweets?

Maybe I’m missing something from your requirements but if you want five tweets, set count=5 and only get a single page.

Hmmm, that doesn’t work with the Twitter gem I’m using for some reason… I’m switching to use the streaming API anyway. Thanks.
