So it seems that this is not being used anymore? so when someone shares the page, it puts the WHOLE url instead of the bit.ly version. The shortened version doesn’t take up so much space as the full URL so it limits the space even more for the Title. What happened and is there a way around this? we can’t change the canonical URL since FB uses that code as well.

I don’t really understand what the problem is here, all URLs on Twitter are since a long time now automatically shortened using Twitters own t.co shortener, so regardless of how long your URL is in the compose window, you will have always the same amount of remaining characters.

UWhen you SHARE through a tool like AddThis, it is pulling the FULL url (canonical URL) - not the shortened URL that is in the meta tags. It used to pull the URL listed in the meta tags.
