Twitter Card images showing as gray boxes

We’ve been using Twitter Cards (Summary_Large_Image) for a while now and it’s been working fine. But recently I’ve noticed that most of my tweets are showing the gray box image even though the validator whitelists the links successfully. Here’s an example of two links that have exactly the same meta data attached to them, but 1 is rendering the large image correctly, the other is not (gray box).

What could be the issue?

I’m not sure what is happening here but I noticed that I am unable to load the URLs listed in the twitter:image tag in either of these two pages in my browser. Changing to https (and dropping :443) works.
