Twitter buttons are not automatically shortening the URL

Hello,

I recently installed the Twitter button on my website https://twitter.com/about/resources/buttons#tweet and tweeted one of my posts. The URL was shown in its entirety and not shortened using T.co. Isn’t this supposed to happen automatically? Is there some special implementation for this?

It does happen automatically – but the site and most Twitter interfaces understand how to display the original URL in context to the tweet. The click goes to t.co and then is redirected.
