Hmmm, your image looks to be well within the size requirements. I see you’re uploading a .gif. Is it animated? I haven’t gotten around to researching animated .gifs in Twitter’s API yet. I would do some investigation into that. I think I’ve seen people talking about it in the forums. It’s definitely crap that Twitter would give you a media_id back without honoring it.

I’m also experiencing this problem

However, my files are all well within the maximum size limits (3MB), even if I sum the sizes of all images combined they total < 3MB.

I have been able to upload two different animated gifs without issue, but combining them to one message fails. However, uploading multiple JPGs / PNG / non-animated gifs seemed okay.

Additionally, if I post > 4 images I get an error too.

So, it seems that you get the error if

• animated gifs when combined in one message
• post more than the allowed 4 photos
• exceed the maximum file size (not sure if thats per file or total upload size)

My full error is…

Exception: 400:The request was invalid. An accompanying error message will explain why. This is the status code will be returned during version 1.0 rate limiting(https://dev.twitter.com/pages/rate-limiting). In API v1.1, a request without authentication is considered invalid and you will get this response.

Hi guys,
I am having the same problem.

That is the problem : with a statuses/show i get the id_str of a media, which has been tweeted by me from the web on my account.
But when trying to post statuses/update with this id in media_ids, I have the same 324 error code, “The validation of media ids failed.”

May someone have a solution ?

The issue here is that once that media item has been attached to a Tweet, it cannot be reused. So you’d need to re-upload an image to attach to a new Tweet.

A 400 is a “Bad Request”. Not the same as 324, which this thread is about. You have also not given details about the request/response you are experiencing.

@jason_rea, I din’t give much details because I think it’s a problem with Twitter API. Because, the code I’ve works fine in localhost, but doesn’t work when the app is hosted. Everything else works fine, except the image upload

Am using the following code:

Give us some request/response data, such as the data that is in my original post in this thread that I gathered with Fiddler. Do you have What makes you assume that it is a probblem with Twitter’s API? Obviously your code works if it runs on local host. Do you configure your app to point to your hosted environment?

Yes I’ve configured my app to point to the hosted environment. Every other API request I make to Twitter works very well, except the image this media upload thing.

As the same code works on localhost and not on the actual domain, I don’t find what I need to change at my end

So just checking if it’s working for anyone on their actual server?

It is working for me in a hosted environment. The only way I experience errors is with images that exceed 3MB or with expired OAuth tokens. I’ll ask again, respectfully, for a 3rd time: Can you give any more detail, perhaps request/response data when the error occurs? There is absolutely no way we can help when all you give us is “a 400 error when not in localhost.” You can’t just go around blaming stuff on Twitter when you have no facts to back it up. I was extremely detailed in my original post, which was my responsibility when I claimed that something was amiss with Twitter’s API. Give us your full code, along with request/response in Fiddler, and maybe we can help.

Are your images larger than 3Mb in size?

No, I reduced image size to 2.84Mb
Perhaps it’s happening because image resolution is 5076x7520.

Guys, our multiple posts with image attachments are facing the same error. All images are size less than 3MB, I double checked. Please help us figure out what is happening !!!

If I had to guess on this one, it’s because the dimensions are too big. Try a smaller image and see what happens.

Thanks Jason_rea it worked but how do I know what are the dimensions limit so we are not sending images which will hit the limit? I could not find any information in the docs … Am I missing something?

You are not missing something. Twitter has little to no documentation about the media upload endpoint and what it returns. In fact, this thread proves that it returns a success response and media_ids for media that cannot be attached to a tweet. @andypiper has promised to update the documentation and possibly the upload api at some point.

This post was extremely useful, the problem for me was posting more than 4 image to a tweet.
