Hi there,

I have just put our twitter feed onto our sharepoint site. The feed is working through Chrome but not working through IE. Any ideas why this is happening and how we can resolve it?

Which version of Internet Explorer are you using to view the Sharepoint site? Does your site specify a compatibility mode which may downgrade the browser?

Twitter’s widgets JavaScript supports IE 9+.

Does an x-ua-compatible instruction appear in your page source or in an HTTP header for the page?

View source of the page and search for x-ua-compatible. The HTTP header is not visible, but may also appear. Sharepoint sites are usually private and hosted on an intranet, so we might not be able to take a look on your behalf.

Our SharePoint is hosted over on the internet I believe and we are to access it via any web browser whether in or out of the work place.

This line is forcing IE to render your page in IE 8 compatibility mode. This means that Twitter widgets will not work. You can try removing that line from your source code to see if that resolves the issue.

Hi, It’s a hosted site so we are unable to change this from the source. We can only change the content on the page, any other ideas?

No, I’m afraid not - that tag will force IE into compatibility mode, and thus the widgets will not work. Sorry about that!

Hi Andy, Ok that’s a real shame. Do you think IE, Twitter or SharePoint will come up with a solution to fix this for the future?

It’s really a matter of IE and Sharepoint here. We upgraded our widgets to modern web standards over a year ago, and unfortunately Sharepoint forcing you back to IE 8 levels of functionality is not something we can fix. I’d talk to your web host and see if they are prepared to help.

I have spoken to our IT and they say there isn’t anything they can do? Do you have any suggestions on what they can do?

According to various searches I just did on Microsoft’s site and StackExchange, you’d need to edit the Sharepoint master pages to include "X-UA-Compatible" "IE=11" instead of IE8. However, I am not a Sharepoint administrator so I am not sure of the impact that would have on other users or browsers.

Twitter’s widgets JavaScript does not support Internet Explorer 8. Your webpage asks Internet Explorer to render the page by emulating Internet Explorer 8. Your webpage’s browser requirement is under the minimum version of Internet Explorer supported by Twitter’s widgets JavaScript.
