Dear Twitter Staff,

It looks like the Targeting documentation here shows that the Twitter Search Placement is different from the Twitter Timeline, Twitter Profiles and Tweet Details placement types.

Twitter Search:
Age Targeting, Devices, Events, Gender, Keyword Types (All), Language, Locations, Network Activation, Network Operators, Platform, Platform Version, Tailored Audiences, WiFi Only

Twitter Timeline:
Age Targeting, Devices, Events, Followers Of, Similar to Followers Of, Gender, Interest, Language, Locations, Network Activation, Network Operators, Non-exact Keyword Types, Partner Audience Types, Platform, Platform Version, Retargeting Types, Tailored Audiences, TV Targeting Types, WiFi Only

Twitter Profiles & Tweet Details:
Age Targeting, Devices, Events, Followers Of, Similar to Followers Of, Gender, Interest, Language, Locations, Network Activation, Network Operators, Non-exact Keyword Types, Partner Audience Types, Platform, Platform Version, Retargeting Types, Tailored Audiences, TV Targeting Types, WiFi Only

What are you expecting us to do in this scenario?
Do we restrict all of the other targeting types when we select the Twitter Search placement for a line item?
What is the expectation when we include all three of these placements for a line item? Do we target everything? Or do we only include the targeting that is specified under Twitter Search above?

Please advise. @hwz @JBabichJapan

Hi @msbukkuri! You should do the intersection of the allowed targeting options, and use only those.

@majoritasdev The intersection would only result in the subset - which is already is listed under the Twitter Search. But I would like for a Twitter Staff member to comment before proceeding.

Hi,

We have a set of validation rules which run upon trying to create line item and targeting combinations, that for ads.twitter.com may be protected from happening via graying out and UI form design but via API you can attempt to create combinations of via Ads API. Because of the complexity of the number of combinations and frequency of change there is some area here that is actually not documented and we expect that you should be able to catch a validation error and show either that error or a generic one to your user of the user interface.

There are some things which you should logically prevent, but for placement (ALL_ON_TWITTER, etc) we are strongly encouraging to follow the guidelines of the endpoint: https://dev.twitter.com/ads/reference/get/line_items/placements

Targeting can sometimes prevent creation of the line item for certain combinations, but since you normally aren’t specifying SEARCH only (instead like both TIMELINE + SEARCH) for non-Keyword Targeting situations the targeting validation would allow you to use something like TV Targeting even though SEARCH is also specified.

Please give it a try, let us know if you find out otherwise and also mark this as solution if you think it’s enough info!

Thanks,

John
