Permission for data collection for academic research

Hello,

I am pursuing MSc in the UK. As part of my research project, I intend to analyse the language and sentiment of tweets related to employees in organisations. I have read the developer policy at https://developer.twitter.com/en/developer-terms and agree to those.

I have a follow up question in this regard. The policy states that -

You may not distribute more than 1,500,000 Tweet IDs to any entity (inclusive of multiple individual users associated with a single entity) within any given 30 day period, unless you are doing so on behalf of an academic institution and for the sole purpose of non-commercial research or you have received the express written permission of Twitter.

Although my usage is for non commercial research and is associated to an academic institution, I would still like to get written permission from Twitter. How do I get that?

I suggest that you apply for a developer account. During this process, you will be asked to provide your use case. Our policy team will then review this use case and either approve, reject, or ask you to provide more details.

When filling out your use case, I encourage you to be as detailed as possible to help move you through the process.

I have applied for a developer account and have got the approval for the application.

However if I process more than 1.5 million tweets in a 30 day period, is the approval still valid? Or do I need a separate written approval by Twitter? Is the approval of the application considered to be the written approval which the privacy policy mentions?

If you have an approved developer app, you should be good to go to access as many Tweets as you’d like. You can access a good number of Tweets for free using the sandbox tier of our premium APIs and the standard APIs, but if you need increased volumes, you might want to consider our paid versions of the premium APIs. You can learn more about this here.

We do require an approved use case for certain access to our APIs. If we find that your usage of the APIs does not match your proposed use case or is against our policy, we will revoke your access.
