No results with search API calls using "from:" in query string

When using: …/search/tweets.json?q=from:TWITTERUSERNAME

…I’m always getting back 0 results. If I drop the “from:”, I get results, but of course not exclusively those from TWITTERUSERNAME. Is this expected? New problem? Or is it specific to certain twitter users based on their settings?

Client is a mobile app using authenticated API 1.1 requests.
