I have a site that dynamically generates multiple search terms every day. The user then clicks on those terms and a customised widget shows the search results (merged with specific timelines). The search terms generated are numerous so setting up a widgit with a unique ID each time each day is not practical.

Grabbing and caching the results on the the server then dynamically loading them on the client also seems out of the question because of the rate limits. The search terms represent dynamic situations (rolling news etc) - so need to be updated constantly (say every 30 secs). If you have 200 terms, so 400 searches per minute 24000 per hour - not looking good.

Before the 1.1 API upgrade each client was responsible for their own searches depending on what search they clicked, the web page would only search on the ‘active’ widget thus limiting their searches. Again, if this was server based there would be rate limit problems - say you have 2000 people using the site, each is asking the server for a new search every 30 seconds.

Since the upgrade I cant seem to find a new framework to make this work any more - except loading the searches in a new window withiun the twitter.com site - but that takes a lot away from the concept. I spent a goo few months on this and now…its broken!

I just need exactly the same as @onedrop77 , used to do this with the old one, and now that i’m finishing my master thesis and i wanted to use it as proof of concept for social context awareness and its not possible anymore. could you at least tell when or if its coming?

It’s not possible to provide the kind of experience you’re looking to provide using the search-based embedded timeline widgets.

If you required your end users to authenticate, you would look likely have better rate limiting scenarios to leverage – API v1.1’s model is that you grow your use of the API through requiring users to auth. Then when you’re executing a reoccurring query, you’re doing so on behalf of the user(s) who are interested in that information.

I also recommend taking a look at the Streaming API. While it can take a bit more work to get started with it, often the best way to scalably search Twitter data is to already have it.

I was wondering if there is any way I can specify the date range for the tweets to be a part of? Or even something like sinceId - I have tried implementing this directly onto the I am embedding, but without success.

Thanks Vince, that has worked. One final question, if I need to update the date range every week or two, do I need to recreate the entire widget - it seems that simply updating the <a href to embed the timeline has no effect on the output.

You can just update the query in the Settings screen. Modifying the HTML does indeed not change what’s displayed.

One last thing, I am using a date range in the search function in order to display Tweets on my site. Is there a way for the iframe to load to a height based on the number of Tweets that have been posted?

I would like to avoid using a scrollbar, and any kind of scrolling (so when I use the data-chrome=“noscrollbar”, it still allows me to scroll using the mouse wheel, and displays the content at a set height. Instead of that, could it just load the height based on the number of Tweets found within that range?

I know this thread is old, but after a couple of hours of not finding a solution, I’ll try anyway:
Is there any news on the availability of reconfiguring search queries? That’d be really great.

What I’m trying to do is dynamically embed a search timeline on my page, based on the subject of the page.
I’m receptive to other solutions as well.
