Is there a rate limitation on retrieving twimg.com images?

I develop an app that downloads images from several imagehosts in quick succession and it seems that twimg.com images (linked to by pic.twitter.com links) start to download more slowly after a bunch have been downloaded already.

Is this some sort of rate limitation to preserve bandwidth? And if so, what are the exact limitations for retrieving the images?

Is there any info on what is an acceptable downloading profile? twimg.com appears to stop answering requests beyond a certain threshold. Are there any guidelines?
