Hi all,

I’m a software developer and social media researcher and I invite you to try out Mecodify, an open-source tool that emerged out of an academic project funded by the EU to help social scientists extract and visualize Twitter data. It works with API 2.0 and has the option of using a sandbox or premium (Academic) license.

The tool was originally intended for a closed group of researchers, which explains why not many researchers have used it yet. Check out some of the scholarly articles that used Mecodify on Google scholar by searching for “mecodify”. See: https://scholar.google.se/scholar?q=%22mecodify%22±intitle%3Amecodify

The tool, however, is actually open for all to use and you are welcome to experiment with it. To know more about its background, you can check the official website at http://www.mecodem.eu/mecodify/ and can also check out the demo at https://mecodify.org/demo .

Mecodify uses a LAMP stack and works seamlessly on a pre-configured LAMP Ubuntu droplet (for example, DigitalOcean pre-configured LAMP droplets as an option). But if you don’t have your own server, you can use it on your own computer using the Docker version. I tested it on Mac OSx but have no reason to think it would not work on PCs.

There’s a 4-year-old video tutorial of an earlier version (was API 1.1 at the time) that you can find on YouTube, which I did for a Webinar on Mecodify: Understanding the pulse on social media.

When I get some time, I’ll gladly record some new tutorials for the API 2.0-compatible version.

Feel free to send suggestions or questions. It’s all work I do in my spare time (not paid to do this) so it may take time for me to reply with details.

Wishing you a great new year 2022!

Sincerely,

Walid Al-Saqaf, PhD

You should be able to post links in the forum now btw, it treats first time posts a little too suspiciously sometimes.

Thanks. I’ve now edited it to add the links. I had to be creative to guide the readers to the correct links

As I have previously used Mecodify as a research tool in a study, I have some experience with Mecodify and I find it really useful and easy to use, especially for those who are not so familiar with programming languages. Given that the literature using that tool is expanding in time, I guess I am not alone who thinks so.

Thanks Haktan,

It is great to know that you used the tool.

Since API v2 is relatively new, we’ll consider adding more options to the tool, such as including a map for geo-located tweets and developing the social network features.

Any bug reports or issues are welcome here, via email (admin@mecodify.org) or on the Github repo issues page.

Good luck to you in your future research!

Best

Walid

I’m currently using MeCodify for my dissertation research and have been thrilled with it. I have no coding skills and limited technical skills, and I would have either had to change my dissertation topic or learn how to code in order to conduct my research if this tool didn’t exist.
