How to use API to gather total tweets on a search term in a specific day?

I want to be able to aggregate the total amount of tweets on a specific day so I can do this daily in order to create a chart for a study.

For example, I want to see the total amount of tweets which involved the search term ‘marathon’ on the 16th April 2013. Then I can repeat this daily in order to be able to create a chart.

Additionally, It would be great to be able to include the metadata for geographical location.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
