Find geolocated tweets, probably using the search API with the “geocode” parameter set:
https://dev.twitter.com/docs/api/1/get/search

Then overlay them on a Google Map using the Google Maps API: http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/javascript/overlays.html

Since most users don’t activate the geolocation option for privacy reasons, I included the extra option of including the location in square brackets within the tweet. I then use the Google maps api to geocode the location before adding it to the maps. e.g. “Soup for tea [San Francosco, CA]”

This might be old, but I just created what they are looking for with the Twitter API and Google Maps API. Took me an hour or so. http://www.itsatwap.com I’ll write a blog post about how I did it in a bit. It still needs work, but w/e. Enjoy.

incredibly late to respond. I did not use java for this. See the first comment of this thread by @kurrik for how I did it. People that have asked me how I made http://itsatwap.com just want the code and nothing more… once they have the code, they want me to develop something for them… which I’m not going to do.

@joshkrajnak I apologize for bumping such an old thread. I am trying to implement something similar to what you have done with twaps. Can you tell me how did you get tweets using the GET search/tweets in Twitter API without passing a query q where q is a requirement. I am looking to get all tweets within 10 mile radius irrespective of the search query. Also, some of the returned tweets have the geo field as null, how can we get the location of the user so that we can map the tweets using the google maps API markers.

Not all tweets have associated geo information, this is a user choice.

There’s an example of how to perform a geo-only search in the search API documentation (see “When you want to know what tweets are coming from a specific location, with a specific language:”)

So is there any way to retrieve only those tweets that have the location shared ? My purpose is similar to what @joshkrajnak has done with twaps. I am looking to map the tweets on google maps.

If you use the geo-only search I would assume that only returns tweets with location data? I have not checked this however. We also have a couple of nice apps using the Streaming API which do mapping onto maps or globes in our samples repository.

Yes. That is what I am wondering as to why all the tweets I receive have coordinates and geo set to null. Could you confirm this ? Also, the sample RUBY app tweetmap is something what I am trying to implement.

The Tweetmap sample is using the Streaming API not the REST search API, so it will be doing a geo filter. The results may well differ between the two APIs.
