How do I extract text from the latest tweet?

First of all, excuse my little knowledge on the field of programming.
I would like to know, if there is a way to extract the text of the latest tweet of a user in order to use that text with another application.
I had thought of maybe extracting the text from a get/statuses/show.
Any ideas?
Any help would be welcome.
