I’m only getting this error when trying to use the Gallery tag. So for instance http://drawquest.com/slothdude doesn’t work, but if you validate the tags on one of his drawing pages which uses the Photo tag, http://drawquest.com/p/2gni9w, it’s fine.

Same problems, for HTTP or HTTPS images, coming from Flickr or even my own domain (which isn’t validated yet).

Side note, our servers use a TLS3 cert, allowing multiple secure sites per a single IP. Https works on modern browsers supporting TLS3. Could this be related?

SOLUTION: You need a robots.txt in web-root. Need. Also be advised that Twitterbot hits your server WITHOUT a trailing slash, even if one is provided in the to-scrape url. This was breaking due to the way our app was configured.
(This solved the proxy image issue, I am still receiving a 500 error when doing a live validation)

Twitter Bot IS hitting our server, once. It is making a request for /robots.txt and nothing more. It neither hits the image (when filling in the Sample Validator) or the specified page (when submitting a link for validation).

The above leads me to believe the rub lies in the robots.txt file, which we do not have, and as a result, you get a full-featured and styled 404 page when accessing that url. This MAY be breaking the Twitterbot.

SUCCESS! Creating a blank robots.txt changes the error message, now for progress!!
