[DMs] Are there any known issues with DMs being delivered?

I had a few hundred people sign up to receive a DM everyday from us at a certain time.
It’s been working well for a long time.

But starting about 2 weeks ago a decent percentage (50% or more in my back of napkin math) aren’t receiving push notifications for the DM or are receiving it up to 24 hours later.

I’ve noticed this on my person accounts where I sub to notifications from certain twitter accounts I love to follow. I’ll think “did they really JUST tweet this” but it’ll be from hours and hours ago.

Is this a known issue?

I’ve also been having issues with Slack so I wonder if it’s a 3rd party thing?

We do have a few questions for you to help inform our investigation:

Are users seeing this across ios, web, and android?
Is it just DM notifications?
Does the badge count appear on mobile?
Are there any missing inbox messages?
And have you been able to find a pattern in the types of users that have been affected by this? Any additional insights about those who experienced the delay or non-delivery would be helpful.

I’ll answer each question to the best of my knowledge:

Are users seeing this across ios, web, and android?

The AAAPI doesn’t return any device specific information so I am not sure which platforms are affected. From the scrolling bug I can tell the case below is from an iOS user.

Is it just DM notifications?

As far as I know yes it’s just DM notifications.

Does the badge count appear on mobile?

Don’t think so but not sure

Are there any missing inbox messages?

Not sure in the general sense but I can tell you this: We have a script I regularly run that goes through the images we need to send via a DM. I send all of these images to both myself and my boss. We often are missing 1 or 2 out of a half dozen or so each time. A hard refresh of twitter is required and then navigating back to the DM window is required to see all the images (even though my DB/logs said they were all sent succcessfully)

And have you been able to find a pattern in the types of users that have been affected by this? Any additional insights about those who experienced the delay or non-delivery would be helpful.

No patterns yet but I will definitely keep it in mind.

This lady opts in to our quiz as soon as she saw the DM (2 seconds later, 2018-10-25 23:55:06 read time and 2018-10-25 23:55:08 as the message sent time)

Had another user report that their DM notification was delivered very late (24 hours late)

Just had an instance where our main account and the phone that is logged into the account just received about 200 push notifications for messages ranging from a few minutes old to 20 plus.

It quite literally crashed my phone!

I also saw a 100+ “Message requests” from users that had gotten a bot response in our DM feed from us.
Twitter.com says 0 message requests (we have DMs completely open fwiw)

Hey @bobber205 - It looks like you might have Twitter set up on multiple devices. Have you noticed that the DMs are delivering properly to one of your devices and not to the other?

Also, have you seen this behavior continue since we last chatted?

We haven’t surveyed users about this recently so I’m not 100% sure at the moment.

As for my own notifications that makes sense – is there a limit on the number of devices I should connect to my TW account to help with delivery? Is it just more than 1 that’s a problem? It’s’ not a big deal if I don’t get my notifications only worried about others fwiw.

It shouldn’t be an issue to have multiple devices receiving notifications at the same time.

Have you noticed that the DMs are delivering properly to one of your devices and not to the other?

That was more of a question to help us troubleshoot the issue. If you are experiencing the DM notification delivery issue on both of your devices, that is one thing. If you are only experiencing it on one and not the other, it might be another.
