Could not authenticate with OAuth

For those looking for a solution: the problem here was that I used /1/statuses/update as the url where /1/statuses/update.json is required, even if you post.

So:
$oauth->post(‘statuses/update’, array(‘status’ => ‘hello world’));
becomes
$oauth->post(‘statuses/update.json’, array(‘status’ => ‘hello world’));

having issue with foreign character. I tried
$oauth->post(‘statuses/update’, array(‘status’ => “Düsseldorf Tourist”));
and
$oauth->post(‘statuses/update.json’, array(‘status’ => “Düsseldorf Tourist”));

It does not tweet. Any idea how I can get this to get tweeted with the umlaout. please help

Hi,
I am facing a similar problem. I was able to authenticate my application but the rate limit is still staying on 150 requests rather than increasing to 350.

Any idea as of why this may be happening?

I tried
$oauth->post(‘statuses/update’, array(‘status’ => “ABCD”));
and
$oauth->post(‘statuses/update.json’, array(‘status’ => “ABCD”));
This is not giving any error, but it is also not posting. It is wastage of valuable time in twitter.
There is something hidden.

To remove the problem with the Umlauts use the htmlentities function of php, but pay attention, this will make your message a little longer.

I’m also getting the error “Could not authenticate you” when trying to post using special characters. What is the right way to do it?

I’m using Abraham’s twitteroauth library and that is what I have tried:

for $to->post(‘statuses/update’, array(‘status’ => “Comentário”)); and $to->post(‘statuses/update’, array(‘status’ => utf_encode(“Comentário”) )); I get the error “Could not authenticate you”
for $to->post(‘statuses/update’, array(‘status’ => utf_decode(“Comentário”) )); The message sent was “Coment?rio”
for $to->post(‘statuses/update’, array(‘status’ => urlencode(“Comentário”) )); the message sent was “coment%C3%A1rio”

I also tried to encode my php file from “ANSI” and “UTF-8 without BOM” and did the above tests again, but nothing works.

Any ideia?

Hey Matt,

I am having a very similar issue. This script works great when I use the token/secret combo from my app page. But when I replace user token & secret with another set from an account that has given read & write permissions to my app, I get the “cannot authenticate” error response…could I have gotten the wrong type of token/secret combo? When I authorize the app for the test twitter account it says read & write permissions. Could I somehow be getting permissions that are not permanent to read & write?

I am facing same problem, when i use since_id in my request. It is working fine without since_id.

Here is the response which i getting:

For me problem has been solved by removing the utf8_encode function and only a rawurlencode, provided all data are in proper utf-8 charset:

public function encode($string) {
//return rawurlencode(utf8_encode($string));
return rawurlencode($string);
}

in the EpiOAuth class.

using same oauth tokens it works for all get requests, not for posts.
the permissions for the App are read, write, directmessage.
