Consent flow loop and general troubles

So developing with Twitter has been driving me crazy! I am trying to do a school project using a Twitter bot.
I started out by applying for a developer account on my personal twitter (this one). I got approved the next day, which was great, however I didn’t realize that you couldn’t create a new handle and I don’t want MY personal account to be transformed into a bot (if you can somehow create a sub-user or something, PLEASE tell me how!)

So I created a new user (@botfridur), and applied for a developer account, and at first it went great! I started developing the bot in node.js and it was working well, listening to user’s tweets (just my own for now) and responding However, the next day I got some error when trying to serve node and initializing a stream, despite not changing a thing. Then I noticed I wasn’t able to log into that account online either, it just gives errors and when I check the network response it says:

… So basically, it’s broken. I’ve tried sending an email about this to Twitter, and haven’t gotten any response.

So my last attempt was to create yet another account, a clean slate, and was planning on waiting now and not start developing until I was sure I’d been accepted for a dev account and wouldn’t be blocked. So I create a user, and everything is going well, until I try applying for a developer account. It told me I needed a verified email Address, and I thought SURE I have one more email (last one), so I tried adding it and it said “Unable to edit email, please try later”… This happened a few times, and I thought “Hmm maybe there’s something wrong with the email” since it’s my old work email, so maybe it’s not connected anymore. So I created a NEW email, and tried adding that, and when I did I got the response that I couldn’t add an email and I had exceeded the limit in trying to add an email.
So I’m guessing that account will probably get flagged too!

So this is my final attempt to actually make HUMAN contact, since all twitter help lines seem to only lead to bots. Can somebody please help me?? What can I do?? This project is due in two weeks and just doing this has taken like 10 days!! Any help would be terrific.

→ You can create an organization account and invite users to join. I believe you created an individual account so that’s why you aren’t able to link users to one developer account

→ Where exactly were you seeing the above error message? Are you able to access your developer account to reset your keys/access tokens to see if that changes anything?

Hi @hmz, thank you for replying! I don’t think you understood what I meant with a sub-user, I meant that even though the developer account is in my name, I would have liked to create a bot that had it’s own handle, so instead of tweeting from my account, it would tweet from their own. I’m surprised that this isn’t an option.

For the second part, no I’m unable to do anything with that account. That account is another user I created specifically to act as a bot, and seems to be completely broken.

This is what I see when trying to log into the dev account for that user. Logging into the regular account also just gives errors, and it’s there when I check the network where I get this error message.

I’m currently trying a third user and hoping it will go through smoothly. I have already had my developer application approved but somehow I still get “application under review” when I log in, so I’m afraid if I start developing I’ll get shut down again. Is there somebody who can look into my case?

Hypothetical.

You have a developer account with @handleA.
You want to post a Tweet to @handleB
To do this, you will have to use POST statuses/update.
This endpoint requires user context authorization, so you will need a consumer key, consumer secret, access token, and access token secret.

Since your developer account and Twitter apps are owned by @handleA, you could post a Tweet to @handleA’s account by using the tokens that you pull from one of @handleA’s Twitter apps.

You can also post a Tweet to @handleB’s account by using the @handleA’s consumer key and consumer secret, but you are going to have to pull access tokens from @handleB by using the 3-legged oauth process.

Based on the above, you only need a single developer account to be able to develop a bot using a different @handle.

I’m not familiar with this error message. Are you still experiencing this?

Going back to the hypothetical that I outlined, you should be able to do everything that you are trying to with a single developer account.

Thank you so much for pointing me to the 3-legged oauth, I had no idea this was possible I will check that out.

Regarding the bot account @botfridur, yes. It still just gives me errors and I am unable to look at the profile using Twitter. Maybe that account is just dead, I have another bot account still so I’ll try the way you pointed out

But even though it says “log in to twitter.com to unlock your account” this is happening when I try to log in so thats not much help.

I think this happened because I was using the access keys and tokens before getting an approved dev account so I thought this would be a dev issue… But nevermind, I already declared this account dead and am trying to get another account approved now.

But I have another question, you said:

But doesn’t that entail that account B would have to have consumer key and token, so we can pull down the access tokens? Doesn’t that mean that B would also have to have a developer account? Or am I misunderstanding this?

Hi @EddaPeturs. I think there is a misunderstanding here. With 3-legged-oauth, it basically allows a user to give an application authorization to access their account on their behalf.
