Can anyone shed light on how searching tweets by geolocation actually works?

I’m getting a decent amount of tweets containing coordinates which is awesome, but there are always a few that have null coordinates. What is puling these tweets into the results? The user provided locations are often not even locations at all (ex. “YAYAREA”) but often they will be vastly different areas like San Francisco, as well as Chicago.

I know the search api is greedy in terms of geolocation and falls back to user defined locations in their profiles, but some explanation as to what is going on in that black box would be so awesome.
