You’ve returned the avatars to behaving according to the true/false parameter setting but, unfortunately, you’ve still left the user name in on every tweet. Shoehorning the avatar and user name into every single tweet when it’s already in the header of the widget was obviously a pointless change. So, you’ve managed to unbreak part of what you broke. How about going for the brass ring and fixing the whole shebang by removing the user name too? As someone else said, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” The widget was just fine before you started tinkering with it. Feel free to put it COMPLETELY back to the way it was before your “Display Guidelines” change.

@steevithak, thanks for the CSS fix. Works beautifully. Even though the Twits have finally removed the avatar, they’ve still left the user name on every tweet. I’ve implemented your CSS fix on all of my client sites. Thanks again for sharing.

Avatars have disappeared (great!) but Twitter name is till there. Plus my other options (eg not displaying timestamp) are also still being ignored. My Twitter feed still looks crap. Can you unbreak these other options too?

Update: I’ve since used various of the CSS tips further up this discussion which have fixed my problem - until the next Twitter update presumably.

It’s good that Twitter restored our command over avatars, but I still agree with @mblawyers: It would be better if Twitter could “put it COMPLETELY back to the way it was before your ‘Display Guidelines’ change.”

To remove timestamp, reply, favorite and retweet links add:
.twtr-timestamp { display: none; }
.twtr-reply { display: none; }
.twtr-fav { display: none; }
.twtr-rt { display: none; }

The only annoying thing left is some dots that used to be in between these links.
To remove them you can copy the widget.js script to your own site and remove all occurances of · (or the complete links)

I agree to all of this. I tried to get rid of the username with the CSS solution but it only worked for a couple of hours, wierd… Please Twitter, make these changes to make it more user-friendly.

The look of our site has been altered without us having laid a finger on it. Why have the username appear in front of the Tweet when it’s already above it? The timestamps appearing are not the end of the world but now our Twitter Profile Panel which was carefully sized, doesn’t fit. The website homepage dimensions were built around it - why should you be allowed to suddenly interfere with that. Please restore it as soon as possible or we will cease to use it at all…

Not had any reply about this yet but more problems than you can probably imagine are being caused by the lack of control over the widget. Last chance I think to remedy it or we’re going to get rid of our Twitter account.

Hi, I enjoy the twitter web search widget immensely. But . . . I used to be able to NOT show avatars and hash tags. I am guessing you changed the widget codes per your “Display Guidelines”: will you possibly consider letting users like me go back to letting us decide for ourselves whether we want to show avatars and hash tags. I think from twitter’s vantage point, this would be a business opportunity – maybe we could get that code for (hopefully) a nominal annual fee ($25?): those not willing to pay that fee would then be required to follow the Display Guidelines fully.

Has there been any movement at all on this issue? If we try to remove hashtags or timestamps with CSS, are we violating the “Display Guidelines”? And what are the consequences? I understand Twitter’s reasoning on the issue, but from a design & user experience perspective its a big fail.

Followed your instructions on creating widget (Avatar), got message that it’s successful, but avatar is not showing. Is it because of weekend (Sat & Sun)? Please help. Thanks.
