Asterisk characters throw "Could not Authenticate You"

Using the standard normal /update rest route if your status update includes something like this

Espresso beans *are* coffee beans

let’s say… that throws “Twittter could not authenticate you”. Doesn’t seem like it should be throwing an error at all, let alone this one.

I’m using the standard Ruby gem to do this request.
