I am in a similar situation. I am trying to to finalize timings for my students. Do you have an ETA on when this improved student-project / educator process will be available? Our session starts after Labor Day and we will be doing two or three solid weeks on Twitter at the end of Sept through mid-October.

I was going to have all the students apply through the traditional channel in the first week of Sept. But it sounds like your alternative process may be much better.

As for myself, I already have an app account and have already applied for a dev account. Are you suggesting there will be a different sort of account that I should pursue instead?

You don’t need to apply for a developer account, just create an application (see twitter apps) and you will get instant access to all of the APIs. You can, however, use 1 account and create 35 apps, each assigned for a specific student, and share with them the API keys.

Thank you @LeBraat for the update. Unfortunately I didn’t see it earlier and already directed the students to go through the normal route. We aren’t starting until next week though, so any improvement is definitely welcome

@thethiny thanks for the suggestion, but are you sure the developer agreement allows to share API keys with other people? Btw, I just checked on apps.twitter.com and you do need to apply for access to create apps. Luckily though I did get my account approved!

I’m also very interested to know more about this educational approval process. I was thinking maybe if students can mention an already approved developer account as their teacher for speeding up the process. I also have an approved account, however, I have one class in October and one in December that I teach Big Data and NoSQL with Twitter data.

In response to your last post:

2. You cannot create 30 apps if you are an approved developer. The limit is 10, and also each app must have a distinct use case. - There is a limit of 10, however we also have an elevation pathway for you to create more than 10 apps. You can learn more about this here:

3. You are not allowed to share your API keys, period. - This is correct. Do not share your API keys.

We are actively working on a solution for educators. I recommend that you don’t have your students apply for an account at this time.

Although API key sharing is not allowed you can reach out to an agreement with Twitter for educational purposes as for requiring account approval, a few months ago I started working on my senior project and it requires social media mining. I applied for developer and I instantly got access to creating an app and got my first set of keys. By instantly I mean 0 second delay. My application date was in June 2018.

In addition to this ask (how to change to an organization account), I also need perspective on timing for these new changes. If the changes are >3 weeks away I need to know, so I can revise my course for this offering and delete the Twitter content (and I can bring it back in a future offering when you’ve completed your deployment).

Hi @LeBraat, thanks for the update, this is terrific! I have created an organizational account but I am running into a problem: I tried inviting the students, but I am getting the following error sending the invitations (see below).

Unfortunately I had already directed my students to apply for a developer account. Is this error somewhat related to that? If yes, do you have a good way to work around this hurdle? Please DM me if possible. Thanks!

Yes, it is related to the account (handler) you are trying to invite. The account is either under review (I have tested this) or already been approved (I have tested this one as well).

If the account has been already approved, then the students can go ahead and create an app for the class. If they haven’t, another nice feature would be a cancel button next to “Currently under review”. This would save a lot of time for Twitter employees. Also, make it possible to be invited to different “groups”.

Yes, you do. Everything in that statement is wrong. You need to apply and get approved, then app limit is 10, and you can’t share API keys as it is forbidden. So, totally ignore that and follow this instruction if you are using Twitter APIs during the class:

This error is delivering because your students have already applied. There are two routes that we can go in this situation. We can either have your student’s create a temporary Twitter account that you can add to your organization account, or we can wait for your student’s accounts to be approved.

I know this is not ideal, and I apologize for that. We have listened to you and have plenty of work to do to improve this process. I will make sure to keep you updated on our progress.
