Application was not approved

Hi all,

A couple of years ago (2016 I think) I’ve created an app and yesterday when I checked app.twitter.com, I got a yellow bar telling me I needed to apply for a developer account. To prevent my app getting disconnected from the API I applied for a developer account.

Today I got an email from Twitter stating my request for a developer account was declined because I might not comply with the rules and was advised to read the twitter rules. I replied to that email that I’ve read the Twitter rules and that I was not aware of any violation and asked if could be clarified which rule I was violating. Just a couple of minutes later I got a message stating my approval was closed without any additional explanation.

After some googling it turned out I had an older version of the Twitter rules and after reading the latest version I now see at which point I didn’t comply. Made adjustments to my app and all should be fine now. However, when I tried to reapply I got the message “Your application was not approved. Thank you for your interest in developer access. We are unable to serve your use case at this time.”

I must say that I experience this process as very unhelpful and in a way rude to close my request in this way. I am here with the best intentions.

So my question is, will I be able to reapply or will twitter close my app (as the website states) somewhere in the upcoming months?

I very much understand where you are coming from. Our team is actively working to improve this process and has this pain point on our radar.

At this point in time, the best thing for you to do is to submit an application with a second @handle, assuming that the revised use case is something that you believe complies with our policies. I know this is not ideal, and I apologize for this.

If your second handle does get approved and you need to move your apps over to the new handle, please use this form to initiate the transfer:

Thank you for answering my question and giving me advice on how to proceed.

I however still have a concern regarding this. The APP I developed is posting links on my behalf of articles I flagged as interesting. It will post on multiple social media platforms and one of these platforms is Twitter.

If I understand you correctly your advise is to create a new account and request developer access on that account and move my app to a new account? Wouldn’t that result in me posting on another account and losing all my followers?

It sounds really cumbersome. Is it not possible to re-initiate the request for a developer account on my current account?

I completely understand your concern but want you to know that the workaround will work a little differently than you had interpreted in your last response. It is not possible to reapply with a rejected account at this moment in time.

When you transfer the app to the new @handle, it will transfer all of the access tokens that you have acquired via that app as well, meaning that you should be able to post on behalf of your original handle by using the app’s consumer keys and that @handle’s access tokens.

· Please tell me exactly why this account was rejected

┗ Where did you violate Twitter’s policy?

┗ Is not enough information required?

· What will happen to the rejected account in the future?

┗ Is there any case the registered application deleted?

┗ When will it be deleted, when will the period be?

· Please tell me how to re-apply with the same account

All of our developer applications are reviewed to ensure compliance with Twitter policy. While we can’t comment on specific cases, applications may be rejected if they are found to be in violation of any section of the Developer Agreement and Policy, Automation Rules, Display Requirements, and/or the Twitter Rules.

Additional information on restricted uses of Twitter APIs is available here.

There currently isn’t a way to edit a rejected application, or to re-apply, however stay informed for product updates/changes.
